Press Release

23rd January 2023

Pershore Volunteers Fayre Saturday 28th January 2023 10am to 2pm

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN NEED IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Pershore residents are being urged to start the new year by helping out in their local community.

Pershore Plus Volunteer Centre and Wychavon District Council will be holding a volunteering fayre on Saturday 28th January at Pershore Town Hall. The event will give attendees a chance to explore all the opportunities available locally including positions with well known charities.

The fayre has been championed by Wychavon District Councilor, Dan Boatright, who is keen to see if more help and support can be found from people within the community, “I understand that it is tough for people right now but if you have any spare time it could really make a difference to someone in need. Volunteering is a great way to put the spirit back into our communities.”

Katreena Barnes, Volunteer Co-Ordinator at Pershore Plus Volunteer Centre says the benefits for the person volunteering are very rewarding, “the volunteers who come to us often think they are signing up to help someone else, but they quickly discover how beneficial volunteering is. You can learn new skills, broaden your social circle and helping someone else makes you feel good which boosts your mental health.”

The event runs from 10am – 2pm at Pershore Town Hall on Saturday 28th January. If you cannot make the event, you can contact Katreena at the volunteer centre by email treena@pershorevolunteers.org.uk

Pershore Volunteer Centre operates 2 mini-buses, which are available for other charities and community groups to hire.  When not on hire the Centre uses these mini-buses to run a number of services transport people from Pershore and surrounding areas to wide variety of venues, including the weekly shopping trip to the Co Op, fortnightly trips to the lunch club at St Andrews Centre.  In the year to March 2018 the centre undertook 2,500 passenger journeys; all using volunteer drivers.

Eric Wiles -Chairman of the Volunteer Centre said “the mini-buses are expensive to buy and maintain and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Roundtable for their help to support one of our mini-buses”.

In recognition of the Roundtable’s support the minibus will soon be carrying their logo, so look out for it around town.

“At Pershore & District Round Table we are committed to helping the local community. By making this donation to your fantastic organisation, it is a great way for us to reach out to the whole community, particularly vulnerable people who rely on your service so dearly. It is a pleasure for us to help in some way and hopefully we can continue to work together in the future.”

VICTORIOUS VOLUNTEERS

Our volunteers have gone the ‘extra mile’ in this year’s volunteer week clocking up 165 miles!

Sam Nutting , from Pershore, completed a 5km walk around Evesham and raised £200 for Pershore Volunteer Centre on Working World’s annual sponsored walk.

Emily Foster-Phillips and Roland Honeybunn cycled 80 miles from Pershore via Evesham, Welford on Avon, Broadway, Beckford, Tewkesbury, Upton upon Severn, Worcester, Upton Snodsbury then back to Pershore Volunteer Centre. Emily and Roland completed this in 6.5 hours and raised more than £500.

Tony Rowley, Chairman of Wychavon District Council and Eric Wiles, Chairman of Pershore & District Volunteer Centre welcomed them back to the Pershore Volunteer Centre as part of the Volunteers’ week open day and presented them with commemorative certificates.

Sam Nutting (left) was thrilled to raise money for the Volunteer Centre: “I like to help people”. As well as fundraising, Sam attends Working World Evesham, which is a training centre for people with a learning disability who need a little extra support getting into the workplace.

Emily (right) chose to help raise vital funds for the Volunteer Centre in recognition of the help and support that she has been given by the Volunteer Recruitment team over the last few years. “This has helped me to gain valuable experience and motivation to push towards my goal of achieving a sports degree at Worcester University.”

Roland said “I am helping to raise funds for the Volunteer Centre which provides a valuable Community Transport Service for elderly people in and around Pershore who are unable to access public transport.”

Eric expressed his gratitude: “The whole volunteer centre – trustees, clients and staff – are truly grateful to these volunteers for giving up their time to help us to help some of the most vulnerable people in our community. We thank them.”

Tony, also a Trustee of the Volunteer Centre, said “We need to raise £3,000/month to be able to provide services including Lunch Club, Community Transport and Volunteer Brokerage finding other, not-for-profit, organisations vital volunteers to help provide their support to our community. Contributions like this are very much appreciated”.
